Lauri Törni immigrated to the United States via Sweden and South America in 1951. Before enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces in 1954, he lived in New York and supported himself through various odd jobs. The CIA became interested in Törni fairly soon after his arrival in the United States. The enclosed letters are dated August–September 1951 and concern the recruitment of Törni into the service of the CIA.
